Our Oil Blend: Where Cast Iron and Chickens Meet
Our cast iron seasoning oil wasn’t just made for pans — it was originally developed as part of our hen’s feed program to enhance the nutritional value of our eggs. Over time, we discovered that this blend also happens to be nearly perfect for cast iron seasoning.
The blend is simple: 3 parts flaxseed oil, 3 parts grapeseed oil, 2 parts extra virgin olive oil, and 2 parts camelina oil. This specific ratio balances smoke points, polymerization strength, and long-chain unsaturated fat content — making it ideal for both your cookware and your cardiovascular health (if you’re a chicken). The seasoning oil and conditioner also contain added natural mixed tocopherols and food grade essential oils to stabilize the shelf life and to add a light pleasant smell to the seasoning process.
Getting Started: Stripping & Smoothing (Optional but Recommended)
While not required, restoring your pan with a stripped and sanded surface can dramatically improve performance.
- To strip the pan: Use a rust/paint stripping wheel to remove old seasoning or rust. Wear a respirator or dust mask to protect your lungs from fine particles.
- Sand the surface:
- Start with 40 grit sandpaper
- Progress to 80, 120, then 220, then finish with 320 grit
- This step smooths the sand-cast surface, giving you a sleeker, more non-stick finish.
- Clean the pan: Wash thoroughly to remove all dust and debris. Scrub with a stiff brush or Brillo pad and mild soap. Rinse and dry completely.
Seasoning Instructions
- Preheat the pan:
- Heat your pan to 550°F on the stove top if possible. The stove gives better heat control than the oven.
- You can use the oven, but aim for a steady 500–550°F. Most ovens fluctuate by 50°+ which can affect polymerization.
- Apply the seasoning oil:
- Use the provided cloth (or another natural fiber cloth – do not use synthetic cloth as it will burn).
- Dip the cloth into the oil and use tongs or a spatula to rub a very thin layer across all surfaces.
- Minimize direct contact time between the cloth and hot pan to avoid burning.
- Let it smoke:
- The pan will smoke during this stage — this is good. It means the oil is polymerizing into a hard, protective layer.
- Once the smoke stops, it’s time for the next layer.
- Make sure your space is well-ventilated when seasoning.
- Repeat:
- For a first-time seasoning, repeat this process six times.
- The pan will begin to blacken and deepen in color with each layer.
- Keep the layers thin and even. Too much oil will pool and create sticky, uneven spots that weaken the seasoning. More oil doesn’t create better seasoning — more thin layers do.
- Cool down: Once finished, let the pan cool.
Finishing Conditioner Layer
Our cast iron conditioner is made from beeswax, extra virgin olive oil, mixed tocopherols and food grade essential oils — a simple blend designed to preserve your seasoning and protect your cast iron between uses.
- Once the pan has cooled to around 300°F, apply a thin layer of conditioner.
- This layer may not smoke — that’s normal.
- The conditioner protects against humidity, improves non-stick properties, and extends the life of the base seasoning.
Maintenance Tips
- You don’t need to season every time you use the pan, but you can.
- You can apply the conditioner after each use. It’s not required, but it’s a good habit.
- Dish soap is OK. It’s an emulsifier, not a solvent. It won’t strip polymerized seasoning. But when you wash your pan:
- Be cautious with scrubbing: Regular aggressive scrubbing can wear down your seasoning over time.
- If you wash your pan, dry it well and consider applying a fresh layer of conditioner immediately afterward.
