Transitioning from a comfortable life in a Tennessee home to living in a 22.5′ long camper in Montana may seem like a drastic change. However, this journey has proven to be an exhilarating adventure filled with unexpected encounters, personal growth, and a newfound appreciation for the small things in life. In this blog post, I will share my experiences, from embracing the nomadic lifestyle to discovering the joys of networking, finding inspiration in unexpected places, overcoming challenges in the kitchen, and the ongoing pursuit of stability and growth. We’re moving in the right direction!

Embracing the Nomadic Lifestyle:
Leaving behind my Tennessee home and embarking on a cross-country journey with my loyal companions, Hannibal the dog and Tiger the cat, marked the beginning of a new chapter in my life. The camper became my temporary haven, providing the freedom to explore and immerse myself in the beauty of nature. Taking a leisurely route to Montana, I made the most of this transitional period by turning the journey into a memorable vacation, visiting iconic landmarks such as Mt Rushmore, Crazy Horse, Custer, and the Eye of the Needle. One highlight was a breathtaking helicopter tour of the Black Mountains, which reinforced my love for adventure and exploration.

Unexpected Connections and Inspiration:
While staying at various campsites along the way, I experienced the incredible power of networking. The encounters with fellow travelers and neighbors at these campsites revealed the small world we live in and the opportunity to connect with remarkable individuals. A chance meeting with Mr. Joseph Hill, a retired CEO and entrepreneur, turned into an invaluable experience.

Mr. Hill, a retiree with a wealth of knowledge and experience, noticed the banner on the back of my truck and inquired about Tikkun Homestead. It was a great exercise in pitching my company, because when he asked about Tikkun Homestead, I wasn’t currently thinking about it. I quickly shifted gears and pitched my company, sharing its purpose and vision. To my surprise, Mr. Hill’s background as a retired CEO and entrepreneur made him the perfect sounding board for my ideas. He had a remarkable story to tell.
It turns out that Mr. Hill designed and patented a revolutionary product called The No Spill Spout. This invention, born out of his post-retirement endeavors, necessity and frustration, aimed to solve a common problem of spills while pouring liquids from containers. Hearing his journey of identifying a need, designing a solution, obtaining a patent, manufacturing, successfully marketing and profiting from his creation was nothing short of inspiring. His entrepreneurial spirit and determination were evident as he shared the challenges and triumphs he encountered along the way.
As a relevant side note, during the trip I ran out of windshield wiper fluid. If you have ever drove through South Dakota, I’m sure you can relate to the bugs that attempt to repaint your vehicle. But Mr. Hill gave me a few of spouts to try, and I used The No Spill Spout to refill the windshield wiper fluid. I can attest that it does indeed work great! Instead of spilling a bunch of the fluid in the engine compartment like usual, I didn’t even spill any of it! It may seem like a simple thing, but it’s definately worth it and I recommend looking into it!
Our conversation went beyond business matters. We delved into discussions about life, personal growth, and the importance of pursuing passions. Mr. Hill’s words of wisdom and advice were invaluable to me as a new business owner. He emphasized the significance of perseverance, commitment, and always seeking opportunities for growth and adaptation. Our conversation fueled my determination and ignited new ideas.
Culinary Adventures in a Compact Kitchen:
One of the challenges I encountered in my camper lifestyle was the downsizing of my kitchen. As a passionate cook, I had spent years honing my skills and acquiring an array of tools and ingredients in my previous well-stocked kitchen. However, transitioning to a 3′ section of counter space that included a sink and a propane burner was a significant adjustment. But I refused to let that hinder my love for cooking.
Embracing the limitations, I decided to embark on a culinary adventure. Armed with a few ingredients, I visited a nearby Walmart and picked up some lamb and a variety of vegetables. Back at the camper, I lit up the rocket stove and prepared the mise en place on the picnic bench and got to work. The culmination of my efforts was a reinvented Lamb Stir Fry.

This experience reinforced the power of adaptability and resourcefulness in the kitchen and in life in general. It shattered the notion that a camper’s kitchen couldn’t yield delicious and satisfying meals. Cooking in a camper is quite bit different than the stocked kitchen that I left behind, but it taught me to appreciate simplicity and the joy of making the most out of limited resources. As I continue my journey in the camper, I carry with me the newfound confidence that even in a small kitchen, delicious meals and culinary delights await.
The Journey Continues:
Life on the road is a mixture of fast-paced progress and occasional stagnation. Despite the occasional setbacks, the journey remains a thrilling adventure. The process of finding a permanent plot of land to set roots and the upcoming trip back to Tennessee to collect personal belongings and complete Army administrative tasks add further layers to this ever-evolving journey. The contrast between where I stand today and where I was just a week ago feels surreal, but the excitement and anticipation for what lies ahead fuel my drive to keep moving forward.

Conclusion:
Embracing the camper lifestyle has proven to be quite the experience. From the unexpected connections and inspiration gained through networking at campsites to overcoming challenges in a smaller kitchen, this journey has taught me valuable life lessons. It has reinforced the notion that change, though initially daunting, can lead to personal growth and unexpected opportunities. The encounter with Joseph Hill and his remarkable invention, The No Spill Spout, not only provided business insights but also showcased the power of human connection and the wisdom that can be gained from unexpected encounters. As I continue to build my future in Montana, I am grateful for the lessons learned on this remarkable adventure and excited to see what lies ahead.
